A massive ₹8,206 crore ($1 billion) Powerball jackpot lottery winner has won in a recent drawing on July 19, making it one of the biggest in the game’s history. The winning ticket was sold in Los Angeles, and the lucky numbers drawn were 7-10-11-13-24, with the Powerball number 24.
The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are incredibly slim, standing at one in 292.2 million people. The initial jackpot estimate was $1 billion, but it grew to a staggering $1.08 billion by the time of the drawing. If the winner chooses the lump sum option, they will receive ₹4,582 crore ($558.1 million) before taxes.
This is only the third time in Powerball’s history that the jackpot has surpassed the $1 billion mark, captivating players since its launch in 1992. Prior to this win, the last jackpot was claimed on April 19, with the jackpots growing with each unsuccessful attempt.
Powerball’s rules were modified in 2015 to increase the odds of winning other prizes while making it more challenging to win the jackpot. The odds were adjusted to 1 in 292 million, and similar changes were made to Mega Millions in 2017 to boost jackpots and odds.
The two largest jackpots in Powerball history were $2.04 billion (₹16,886 crore) in November 2022 and $1.586 billion (₹10,646 crore) in June 2016.
